American Rabbits are a heritage breed. The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy lists them as Threatened. These rabbits were developed for both meat and pelts. They have good growth -from what we've seen it is very comparable to New Zealand rabbits. The carcasses are meaty and the meat is delicious. If you are interested in raising meat rabbits this is a breed worthy of consideration. Americans come in several colors. Officially there are only blues and whites but it is not uncommon for a non-showable color will pop up in a litter. There is much discussion about color genetics. Blacks seem to be popular as a way to breed in a deeper, darker blue coloring. There are some who believe that the way to get the deeper, darker blue is to breed to a steel color. We strive for the whites and blues and sometimes sell off colors for those looking only to grow their own meat. Our goal is to have meat for the freezer and some breeding stock available for those who are interested in raising Americans. We try to price bunnies so that it is affordable for those who want to start raising them. Currently we charge $50 for a rabbit with pedigree. Adult rabbits may cost a bit more to offset additional expense in raising them to Contact us for info on current availability. |
